Pretty great for a short film advertising a clothing line. Apparently Lena Dunham likes Wes Anderson (SHOCK). -b
I made a cake for my friend Kristen’s birthday that features her model organism, Tetrahymena thermophila! Sprinkles work surprisingly well for making dual nuclei & cilia. T. thermophila is a microscopic eukaryote; the crazy thing about these guys is that they have seven sexes, which I think makes them super interesting (but not as interesting as E. coli). -b

PS My friend David Malki! & his lovely wife frequent a super quaint diner/bowling alley in Venice; I got to go for dinner last summer. It’s really neat, partially because it feels like a practical joke! The diner is straight up vintage (but you can get a nice, fresh salad) & you could easily miss the door that lead you to a standard, neon-clad bowling alley. It’s no boutique cafe, but I think you guys are with me on this. -b
Happy Friday!
Please enjoy these delightful vintage photos of girls and cats.

In case you needed more proof that kitties and ladies are designed to be best friends forever. -b
I didn’t make MaxFunCon a priority this year, which, in hindsight, was a rookie mistake. BUT boatparty.biz has offered me redemption in the form of a 3 day comedy & music boat party with all my favorite people. I’m so excited to cruise out to a tropical paradise while shuffleboarding around with the likes of John Roderick and Maria Bamford! -b
I’m sure you relate to this. I once went out with a guy because his OK Cupid profile included a cute joke about how he couldn’t bring himself to make two trips, ever. Why is it so difficult to face, particularly when it involves carrying heavy groceries?
& that reminds me: hey-guess-what, Houston just opened it’s first Trader Joe’s! (It’s possible there is one outside the loop, but why would I ever go there?) Bonus: it’s in the old Shepherd theater! We’re about to go check it out and hopefully COOK food for ourselves this week. Like the grown-ass adults we are, or something. -b
PS The delightful comic was made by my MaxFun friend, David Malki! If you want something funny to brighten your life twice weekly, you can count on Wondermark.
We were completely useless this weekend. My guy had minor surgery on Friday and was relegated to the couch for the next few days. I ran a few errands and popped out to a BBQ for a couple hours on Saturday night, but other than that we just kind of sat around. I got some knitting done, at least….
I made this recipe (written by MaxFun friend & TopatoCo extraordinaire Holly Post!) for dinner last night and it was amazing. Not only was it was crazy delicious, but it was also quick & easy & produced at least 6 servings (which is perfect for people like me who’d rather eat homemade leftovers for lunch than Taco Bell).
The only addition I made was adding sweet Italian sausage, though the pappardelle is hearty enough that I don’t think you really need to add anything. My boyfriend is much more of a picky eater than me, and he is way in love with this dish. He went to bed talking about how he couldn’t wait to eat the leftovers all day today. This was my first experience with these gorgeous noodle sheets, & Holly’s recipe completely eliminated the intimidation factor. -b
My friend David Malki! makes a delightfully funny web comic called Wondermark. You should read it and also send him money for PRODUCTS (he writes books too! You like books, don’t you?) -b
I just got back from MaxFunCon! New friends were made, lots of laughing and long conversations were had. I stayed two nights extra at the home of the nicest lady in the world, her delightful husband, and Ms. Mini the cat. If you enjoy comedy and like having friends, I highly recommend MFC. Also, it’s on a mountain! -b
It’s always a nice time to pop over and see what our friends, the Mucho Bueno girls are doing…(hint: before/after on their design space!) -b
